We have visited a beautiful hill in Rome: The Aventino Hill

The Aventino hill has a particular position because it overlooks the Tiber and the Circo Massimo separates it from Palatinum. In a first time the plebs lived in Aventino. In fact here there was the first rebellion of plebs against patrician (rich people in Rome). On the hill there were the temple of Diana, Minerva, Mercurio and other gods.

For its beautiful position during the period of August Emperor the hill lost his popular peculiarity and family of patrician built here rich residences and thermae. In the medieval period many monasteries were built on this hill. Today it is a part of Rome where the most  rich classes live.

On the top of the hill we find important monuments: the church of Santa Sabina; the church of  Sant’Alessio; the big villa of the 'Priorato di Malta' (from the lock of the main gate you may see the cupola of San Pietro in a beautiful perspective) and we find also a suggestive garden: the garden of oranges; from its terrace you may see a wonderful panorama of the centre of Rome. The real name of the garden is "Parco Savello", but roman people call it garden of oranges because in the garden there are many plants of orange.

Il colle Aventino ha una particolare posizione poich� domina il fiume Tevere ed � diviso dal Palatino dalla zona del Circo Massimo. Fu inizialmente un colle abitato dalla plebe. In quest 'area infatti si verificarono le prime rivolte del popolo contro il patriziato. Sul colle sorgevano il tempio di Diana, di Minerva, di Mercurio e di altre divinit�. Per la bellezza della posizione sotto l 'imperatore Augusto l’ Aventino perse il suo carattere popolare e famiglie patrizie vi edificarono ricche dimore e terme. Nel Medio Evo fu sede di Monasteri e destinato a usi agricoli. Ancora oggi � una zona di Roma abitata dai ceti sociali pi� abbienti. In cima al colle si trovano importanti monumenti: la chiesa di Santa Sabina; la chiesa di Sant’Alessio; la grande villa appartenente al Priorato di Malta il cui portone � famoso per il foro sopra la serratura dal quale si ammira, in una bellissima prospettiva, la cupola di San Pietro. Molto suggestivo � il giardino degli aranci, dalla cui terrazza si ammira uno splendido panorama del centro storico. Il vero nome del giardino � Parco Savello ma per la presenza degli alberi di arancio i romani da sempre lo chiamano appunto giardino degli aranci.
