THE EURO
The Euro is the single European currency. It will become legal tender on 1 January 1999 and on 1 January 2002 coins and banknotes will be in circulation. Then, on 1 July 2002 the old national currencies will cease to exist.

The Euro is one of the results of the Maastricht Treaty (7 February 1992) which created the European Union out of the EEC.

At present the Union has 15 Member States: France, Italy, Belgium, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Sweden and Finland.
